    Disclosure & Barring Services (DBS)

To work as a nurses or carer in England require you to have an Enhanced DBS. We have strived to answer some of your questions regarding DBS applications, certificate and update

    Why is a DBS necessary?

To continue to protect vulnerable adults and children in vulnerable circumstances but to reduce the chances of abuse, the DBS is mandatory for all care workers. It also reduces the burden of vetting on employers by making the system more proportionate

What is the DBS Update Service?

The Update Service keeps your DBS certificate up to date. You can subscribe when you apply for a new DBS certificate.Candidates can subscribe to the Update Service when they apply for a new DBS (previously CRB) certificate. The Update Service will keep their DBS certificate up to date.

Reusing a DBS Certificate - Portability

Once subscribed the individual can then take their DBS Certificate with them from role to role where the same level and type of check are required.

    How much will it cost?

There will be a £16 annual subscription fee for the Update Service.

What do I need to do?

After completion of your DBS (previously CRB) disclosure certificate application, you will have 14 days from the date of issue of the certificate to register for the Update Service. www.gov.uk/dbs

Providing PRIMAN with your DBS certificate

Employers are no longer automatically sent a copy of disclosures that is carried out by them on any staff, this means for you to continue working with us we need a copy of your DBS disclosure and confirm that you have registered for the Update Service. PRIMAN must see and verify the original copy of the DBS certificate

Can PRIMAN accept a DBS done by another employer?

Yes we can accept this if you follow the document verification procedures outlined above and have registered for the annual Update Service.

Are there any other changes that I need to be aware of?

Yes, please check your disclosure carefully when it is issued as counter signatories will now be able to select whether the post that you are applying for is to work only with Vulnerable Adults or Children or both. PRIMAN has work with both client groups and in order to maximize your work opportunities we would request that you ask signatories to select both Adults and Children if you are experienced at working with both groups. Alternatively, you will not be offered work for the client group that does not appear on your certificate.

    Nurse Revalidation

    What is revalidation with NMC?

Revalidation is the process that all nurses and midwives in the UK will need to follow to maintain their registration with the NMC.
Revalidation was introduced in April 2016 to support nurses and midwives in demonstrating that they practice safely and effectively. The process is straightforward and encourages reflection on how the NMC Code is applied in your daily practice, ensuring you continue to uphold its standards.
This updated process replaces the previous PREP requirements, and all nurses and midwives are required to revalidate every three years to maintain their registration.
Revalidation applications must be submitted online via the NMC Online portal. If you have not yet created an account, you can easily set one up here.
For those with disabilities who may experience difficulties using NMC Online, we are committed to making reasonable adjustments to ensure accessibility. Additionally, if exceptional circumstances prevent you from meeting revalidation requirements, special arrangements may be available. More information regarding reasonable adjustments and exceptional circumstances can be found in our guidance. For comprehensive details, please visit the official NMC revalidation website: http://revalidation.nmc.org.uk/welcome-to-revalidation.

    PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY INSURANCE

You must declare that you have, or will have when practising, appropriate cover under an indemnity insurance policy. By law, you must have in place an appropriate indemnity arrangement in order to practise and provide care. While the arrangement does not need to be individually held by you, it is your responsibility to ensure that appropriate cover is in place.
    Fulfilling These Requirements:
    A) As part of your revalidation application, you are required to complete a declaration confirming that you have appropriate indemnity arrangements in place.
    B) Most NHS employers provide adequate indemnity cover for their staff. If you are employed, it is your responsibility to verify the specifics of this cover with your employer(s). Further guidance can be found on the NHS Employers website.
    C) When completing your declaration, please consult the relevant information on professional indemnity arrangements. This document outlines the definition of "appropriate cover" and provides detailed guidance for individuals employed by organisations, self-employed professionals, or those working in both capacities. It also includes information for individuals involved in education, voluntary work, or those taking a career break.
    D) Please note that practising as a nurse, midwife, or nursing associate without adequate indemnity cover is a breach of professional standards. If it is determined that you are practising without appropriate insurance in place, your registration with the NMC will be revoked, and you will no longer be permitted to practise as a nurse, midwife, or nursing associate in UK.
We are assisting all our workers with appraisals, which can be used as part of your portfolio to submit for revalidation, as well as issuing you with feedback forms, which you can take to clients you are working at for the agency in order to get practice-related feedback. You can then send this back to us and we will load this onto your agency profile for safe keeping.
